Project Overview

In 2018, Helmsman provided Key Stage 1 metal lockers at West Thornton Primary School. After several years of use, the existing metal lockers were ready for an upgrade. With a new academic year approaching, the school wanted to refresh its lockers with a brand-new solution that would provide students with modern, durable lockers for years to come. This project provided an opportunity to build on previous installations, offering students more storage across the school.

For this project, our team manufactured and installed 69 Key Stage 1 (KS1) two-compartment school lockers to accommodate younger students; additionally, we supplied 95 standard four-compartment metal lockers for the older students. The specification of the KS1 lockers was 1250mm high, 300mm wide and 380mm deep, and the metal lockers were 1800mm high, 300mm wide and 450mm deep. The KS1 lockers were completed with a laminate slat on top, combining durability with the powder-coated steel and a contemporary appearance with the laminate.

Four-compartment metal lockers were manufactured with a sloping top, which increased the rear to 150 mm. The sloping top prevents students from leaving any items on top of the lockers, as well as making the lockers a lot easier to clean, as it reduces dust and clutter being collected.

The metal locker bodies and doors were manufactured from mild steel. The body of the lockers was powder coated ‘Smoke’ whereas the doors had a colour coordination of ‘Smoke’ and ‘Ice’, creating a subtle contrast while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic. All the metal lockers were completed with a diamond hasp lock for users’ own padlock; hasp locks ensure that students do not misplace any keys. The locks were secured with a branded escutcheon plate.
